County Facts
Colorado’s first county was named after the Arapaho Indians and is the third largest county in the state. The western part of the county is primarily urban with residential, retail, industrial and office areas. The eastern part is mostly rural. The county offers a high quality of life, an affordable cost of living and a variety of recreational activities.
History
The Arapaho Indians occupied Arapahoe County in the area east of the foothills which is now the state of Kansas. Kansas became a state in 1861, and at that time Colorado became a territory with Arapahoe as one of the original 17 counties. From the 1820s through the1840s, this area was a popular spot for trappers searching for beavers to make mens’ beaver hats, as well as Buffalo skins.
Economy
With a population of more than 572,000, Arapahoe County residents enjoy attractive residential choices, superior public services, plenty of open space and parks, attractive housing choices and a high quality of life. The county has nine school districts and over 350 service and local improvement districts.
Recreation
Arapahoe County offers a variety of cultural and entertainment activities for residents and tourists. It’s proximity to Denver allows easy access to cultural events throughout the Front Range. The county is also the home of the Denver Broncos. Residents also look forward to the annual Arapahoe County County fair held at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds in Aurora.
